Yes. Melanin-rich skin absolutely needs sunscreen. This is not a marketing invention.
Here is where the confusion comes from: melanin does provide some natural UV protection. Darker skin tones have a higher concentration of melanin, and melanin absorbs and scatters UV radiation. Studies have estimated that very dark skin (Fitzpatrick type VI) has a natural SPF equivalent of approximately 13.
